Launched on February 14, 2024, Mashinani Orchards is a grassroots environmental and livelihood initiative engineered to drive community transformation from the bottom up. Operating in the Nyanza Region of Kenya, the program organizes rural market women into structured farming groups to cultivate sustainable avocado orchards. This deliberate approach allows the initiative to directly confront the critical intersection of gender inequality, financial insecurity, household nutritional deficits, and environmental degradation across the region.
The Mashinani Orchards project directly addresses how economic dependence and poverty drive female vulnerability in rural areas. It serves as a vital intervention following the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2022), which revealed that nearly 41% of women in relationships within Kenya have experienced intimate partner violence. By empowering rural market women to cultivate sustainable avocado orchards, the initiative creates a reliable asset shield that counters systemic gender inequalities. Ultimately, this targeted approach secures food security, stabilizes household income, and builds lasting community resilience against unpredictable climate shocks.
We have equipped 120 rural market women with the skills to lead local orchard cultivation. This foundational training transforms traditional farmers into independent agricultural entrepreneurs for their households.
