The SONCA (Smart Orchard for Nutrition, Climate action and Agroecology) Project, officially launched on January 07, 2026, is a transformative initiative aiming to establish a network of one million geo-tagged fruit trees across Kenya’s Nyanza region. Developed to solve the low survival rates of traditional tree-planting campaigns, SONCA uses artificial intelligence and digital monitoring to turn every planted tree into a trackable, long-term ecological asset.
What began as a targeted school project has now extended into the wider community, positioning local schools as “living ecological laboratories” where youth and community members practice hands-on stewardship. By blending climate-smart agroecology with strict digital accountability, the project establishes sustainable orchards designed to secure long-term food security, climate resilience, and regional ecological restoration.
Why This Project Matters
Traditional environmental campaigns across Africa fail because they focus entirely on the initial, high-profile act of planting while completely ignoring long-term survival. While millions of trees are planted every year through seasonal green campaigns, the vast majority quickly die within months due to a lack of follow-up care, structural accountability, and local community ownership, leaving the true potential of regional ecological restoration unrealized.
The SONCA Project completely fixes this structural flaw by shifting away from temporary planting events and transforming every single tree into a digitally monitored, long-term ecological asset. By giving every tree a physical QR code and a unique digital “tree passport,” the initiative combines advanced agro-ecology with artificial intelligence to track real-time growth data. This allows the team to utilize predictive modeling to flag early health issues and step in with vital interventions, turning standard, vulnerable forestry into a high-survival, tech-driven digital ecosystem.
